How to Prepare Your Mac for macOS Golden Gate 27

macOS 27 Golden Gate arrives this fall, and it is the first version of macOS that runs only on Apple silicon. For a share of Mac owners, the honest answer is that this upgrade is not available to them at all. For everyone else, an hour of preparation is what separates a smooth Sunday afternoon from a lost working day.

I have been running the developer beta on a MacBook Air M2 since July, through beta 5 and beta 7. This guide covers what I measured on that machine, what other testers are reporting, and the exact checks worth doing before you press Upgrade. Work through it in order, or use the table below to jump to your situation.

Clear the space before you upgrade

Meet macOS Golden Gate

macOS Golden Gate is macOS 27, the successor to macOS Tahoe 26. Apple describes the release only as a free software update coming this fall, and the trade press expects September. As of the writing time, it is in public beta now, with developer builds running ahead of it.

The headline change is the hardware floor. Golden Gate needs a Mac with Apple silicon. Every Intel Mac stops at macOS Tahoe.

You can see that decision in the installer itself. The beta 27.0 installer I downloaded (build 26A5421a) weighs 16.99 GB. That is 1.4 GB lighter than the Tahoe installer, a drop of 7.6%.

For years, each macOS installer grew. This one shrank, because Tahoe carried an Intel half inside the same image, and Golden Gate does not. The missing weight is the missing Intel code.

Note

The build prefix reads 26A even though the marketing version is 27. Apple’s internal train numbering runs one behind, the same way Tahoe 26 shipped as 25G. A 26A build on a page about macOS 27 is correct, not a typo.

Which Macs support macOS Golden Gate

Apple publishes the compatibility list on its macOS page. Read it closely and you notice the pattern: every single line ends in “with Apple silicon”, and the word Intel never appears anywhere on the page.

Apple never announced that it was dropping Intel. It listed the Macs that qualify, and the list happens to contain no Intel machines. The “drops Intel support” framing comes from the press, not from Apple.

Howard Oakley, who tracks macOS internals in detail, puts the range plainly: Golden Gate is the first version of macOS to require an Apple silicon Mac, and it supports every model from the 2020 M1 MacBook Air to the M5 Max, though not all of them equally.

The free way to check your own machine takes ten seconds. Open System Settings → General → Software Update. Apple only offers a Mac the versions it can actually run, so if Golden Gate appears there, you are on the list.

The four Intel Macs that lose support, and what to do if yours is one

Four models run macOS Tahoe and do not run Golden Gate: the 2019 Mac Pro, the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro, the 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro with four Thunderbolt 3 ports, and the 2020 27-inch iMac. These were the last high-end Intel Macs Apple sold, and this is where their major-version road ends.

Your Mac keeps working. Tahoe stays on it, and Apple keeps shipping security updates for the previous two macOS versions. Based on how Apple has handled earlier cutoffs, that tail usually runs about three years. Apple has never committed to a date, so treat three years as a pattern rather than a promise.

What that buys you is planning time. Use it to move anything sensitive, keep the browser current, and decide on a replacement before the security updates stop, rather than after.

Rosetta 2 and the macOS 28 deadline

Your Intel-only apps will keep working on Golden Gate and will stop working on macOS 28.

Rosetta 2 is the translation layer that lets Intel-built apps run on Apple silicon. Golden Gate is the last macOS that ships it. That gives you a full release cycle to replace anything that was never rebuilt.

Notice

Installing Golden Gate removes Rosetta 2 from your Mac, as MacRumors reported when the change first appeared. It comes back on demand: the first time you launch an Intel app, macOS offers to reinstall it. Expect that prompt, and do not read it as a broken installation.

Golden Gate also gives you a list of exactly which apps are affected. Oakley notes that the About section of General settings now lists the Intel-based apps that will be incompatible with macOS 28. Nothing in the Tahoe era had this. It is the single most useful pre-upgrade check available to you, and it is covered as step 4 below.

Apple Intelligence, Siri AI, and Spotlight

Running Golden Gate and getting every Apple Intelligence feature are two different things. The base Siri AI layer needs an M1 chip or later, or the A18 Pro in the MacBook Neo. The advanced on-device features need an M3 or later with at least 12 GB of unified memory.

Siri AI is also waitlist-gated. You enable it, you join a queue, and the features arrive when your turn comes.

That waitlist has one side effect worth knowing before you upgrade. For users in the Siri AI queue, beta 3 removed the Spotlight icon from the menu bar. Command+Space now opens a bar labelled “Search or Ask” instead. Any guide that tells you to click the magnifier in the menu bar is describing an older system.

How much free space you need

Apple has published no official free-space figure for Golden Gate. The number floating around the web ranges from 17 GB to 50 GB, which isn’t very helpful. Here is the arithmetic instead.

The installer I downloaded is 17 GB. It needs room to unpack and stage the new system alongside the old one while the install runs. Once the upgrade finishes, macOS needs working room for swap, snapshots, and caches, and Apple’s own storage guidance is to keep 10 to 15% of the drive free.

Aim for at least 40 GB free before you start. On a 256 GB Mac, that is roughly the same as the 15% Apple recommends anyway. If you have 60 GB free, you have nothing to think about.

There is one trap on the way there. macOS reports space that Time Machine local snapshots and purgeable caches occupy as free, and Software Update sometimes disagrees with Finder about how much room you really have. If the update refuses to start on a disk that looks empty, the space is being held by snapshots that macOS has not released yet.

Deleting a few large files usually beats deleting many small ones. Look at Downloads, old disk images, video projects, iOS device backups, and duplicate photo libraries first.

Potential issues and limitations

The beta has been usable for me for two months, with real friction. Some of what follows will be fixed by release. Some of it is deliberate and will not be.

Speed, battery, and the cost of Liquid Glass

Golden Gate leans harder on the interface than any macOS before it. On my M2 MacBook Air, the first click in any Open dialog goes unregistered, and the second one has to be held for the system to notice. Sometimes a click shows up two seconds later.

Switching input languages has become unreliable. I can start typing a word and watch the layout flip back mid-word. With two languages, it is tolerable; with three, it stops being funny. Finder feels slower with every release, and Zoom calls push the processor in ways this Mac never used to.

The network drops for a moment at random intervals, on any Wi-Fi. Rocket.Chat spends several seconds looking for a connection almost every time I focus it, on a 600 Mbps home line. Beta 7 noticeably improved overall responsiveness, so this is moving in the right direction.

Other testers report the same pattern of problems: battery draining 15–20% faster than usual on M2 and M3 laptops; Wi-Fi dropping and reconnecting on M1 and M2; overheating during video calls; and the 80% charge limit resetting to 100% after a restart. There is also consensus that the first 24 hours are the worst because Spotlight reindexes the entire disk before things settle.

My read is that the transparency and glass effects are what the processor is paying for. Golden Gate gives you control for exactly that, in System Settings → Appearance, as a slider that sets how much glass the interface uses.

Drag it toward the left end, and the interface gets flatter and cheaper to draw. If your Mac is an M1 or M2, this is the first setting to change after the upgrade.

Third-party apps, menu-bar utilities, and drivers

Menu-bar utilities and anything that installs a system extension take the hardest hit. Testers on the MacRumors working-and-non-working apps thread have reported failures across AlDente, Hidden Bar, Vanilla, coconutBattery, Gestimer, DEVONthink, SpamSieve, Sonos, TG Pro, pCloud, Okta Verify, Lunar, the Wacom driver, VMware Fusion Pro, Logi Tune, NoMachine, and Moonlight.

Another group half-works, which is harder to notice. Tailscale runs after the upgrade, but stops recognizing its network extension when the app itself updates. MacWhisper lost speaker diarisation. Logi Options+ has trouble with several Logitech keyboards. Speedtest fails in menu-bar mode. One tester reported that OneDrive deleted 800 files, all recoverable from the Trash.

Little Snitch loads and passes no network traffic. One tester summed up beta 5 as breaking Safari along with Cisco VPN and other apps. If a VPN client, a firewall, or a backup agent is load-bearing in your week, check its vendor’s compatibility note before you upgrade rather than after.

Rosetta-dependent pre-login plugins also fail to load, which affects a narrow set of enterprise and encryption tools that run before you sign in.

Note

One tester found that forcing BambuStudio to launch through Rosetta fixed its network plugin. Right-click the app, choose Get Info, and tick Open using Rosetta. It is a rare case where Rosetta is the fix rather than the problem.

Features that were removed, not broken

Several things people report as bugs are deliberate removals. Boot Camp is gone. Time Machine backups to an AirPort or Time Capsule no longer work, and AFP file sharing has been dropped. Encrypted HFS+ volumes are deprecated.

Virtual machines are a special case right now. Golden Gate will not install in most virtualization tools, including Parallels, UTM, VMware, and Tart, because a host on macOS 26.6 cannot handle the macOS 27 installer image. The workaround is to build the VM on a machine that is already running Golden Gate.

Two more, for people with unusual setups. Asahi Linux boot partitions become invisible after the upgrade — the data survives, the boot entry does not. OpenCore Legacy Patcher is incompatible, so anyone running a patched unsupported Mac should turn off automatic updates now.

The beta 3 file-system reports

The most serious problem reported during the beta cycle was APFS corruption after installing beta 3. Symptoms included freezes, apps refusing to open, and local files becoming unreadable or vanishing. Disk Utility returned “Unexpected security xattr” errors, and the repair tool failed with a tree-node error.

German outlet heise.de covered the reports, which came from owners of M1, M3, M4 and M5 machines. Time Machine was the early suspect and did not hold up, because several affected users had never configured it. Apple has not acknowledged the issue publicly or mentioned it in release notes.

Beta 3 is behind us, and I hit nothing like it in two months on the same cycle. It is still the clearest possible argument for the first item on the checklist below.

Warning

External displays are worth testing early. Several testers with two LG UltraFine 5K monitors found that only one display would connect at a time, on Apple Thunderbolt 4 cables, regardless of which port they used. Each display worked alone.

Prepare your Mac: the checklist

Five steps, in this order. The whole thing takes about an hour, most of which is the backup running while you do something else.

1. Make a full backup

Do this before anything else, and do it twice. Run a Time Machine backup to an external drive, then make one independent copy of your genuinely irreplaceable files somewhere else — a second drive or a cloud folder.

Apple’s sizing guidance is that the backup disk should be about twice the size of the storage you are backing up. A 512 GB Mac wants a 1 TB backup drive.

The reason for the second copy is that a backup you have never restored from might go south unexpectedly. Open Time Machine, browse back a few days, and restore one file to prove the chain works end to end.

2. Confirm compatibility

Open the Apple menu → About This Mac and note the chip. Anything starting with M, or the A18 Pro in the MacBook Neo, is on the list.

Then open System Settings → General → Software Update. If macOS 27 Golden Gate appears there as an available upgrade, your Mac qualifies. If it does not appear once the release ships, your Mac is one of the machines that stops at Tahoe.

3. Free up disk space

Get to 40 GB free, using the section above as your target. Start with the biggest items rather than the tidiest ones.

Four places pay off fastest on most Macs:

  • Downloads — old installers, disk images, and PDFs you will never open again
  • Old iOS backups and virtual machine images — these are frequently 20 GB or more on their own
  • Duplicate files — copies of photos, documents, and downloads that accumulate across folders
  • Leftovers from apps you removed — caches, logs, and support files that stayed behind when the app went to the Trash

That last group is the one people underestimate. Dragging an app to the Trash removes the app and leaves its support files in your Library folders, where they keep taking up room for years. 4. Audit your apps before you upgrade

Update everything first. Open the App Store, then check the apps you installed directly, since those update themselves on their own schedules. A current version is far more likely to have an Apple Silicon build.

Then review the Intel apps you have installed on your Mac. Golden Gate introduces the new Settings screen for that: System Settings → General → About → Intel-Based Apps and click Details. In macOS Tahoe, the only way to find out if an app is Intel-based is to right-click it in the Applications folder and click Get Info.

The Kind string will reveal if the app is Universal, Silicon-only or Intel-only

Check what it says about the app’s Kind. If it’s Intel-only, you found one. However, treat it as a to-do rather than an alarm. Each Intel-only app on it needs one of three answers before the next year: an updated version from the developer, a replacement, or a decision that you no longer need it. You have a full release cycle before macOS 28 to work through it.

While you are there, uninstall what you do not use. Fewer apps means fewer things that can break during the upgrade, and it frees space for step 3 at the same time.

5. Save your credentials and FileVault recovery key

Write down your Apple Account email and password, and your Mac’s login password, somewhere that is not the Mac. If FileVault is on, find your recovery key and store it the same way.

A major upgrade asks you to sign in again at least once. If your only copy of the password lives in a password manager that will not open until you sign in, you have a locked room with the key inside.

Two ways to install

Both paths end with Golden Gate running. They differ in how long they take and how much of your current setup survives.

In-place upgrade

Plug in the power adapter, connect to a stable network, and open System Settings → General → Software Update. Click Upgrade Now, agree to the terms, and let it run. The Mac restarts several times.

Expect 40 to 60 minutes, and expect the progress bar to sit still at points. Do not close the lid or unplug during the process. Once you are at the desktop, give the Mac a day before you judge its speed, because Spotlight is probably reindexing the whole disk in the background.

Clean install

A clean install erases the startup disk and sets up Golden Gate from scratch. It is a choice rather than a requirement since nothing about a major macOS version needs one. It is worth the extra hours when a Mac has accumulated years of half-removed software and mystery slowdowns.

The gentler version is System Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content and Settings, which returns the Mac to factory state without a USB drive. You can also build a bootable installer on a USB stick, or reinstall through macOS Recovery; Apple documents both in its guide to reinstalling macOS.

Either way, verify your backup before you erase anything. There is no undo after the erase step.

When the install goes wrong

Install Golden Gate now or wait for the first update?

The update is free, and installing it on a spare Mac or a separate volume costs you nothing but disk space. Installing it on the Mac you work on is a different decision.

The forum consensus among people who do this for a living is to wait. “I’m waiting. I need my Mac to run reliably,” wrote xraydoc in a MacRumors thread about early adoption, and several others gave the same reasoning with different numbers attached. “On the work machine it’s always .2 for me,” wrote benholt in the same thread, pointing at plugin and render-engine certification rather than macOS bugs.

That is the useful frame. The question is rarely whether macOS is stable, it is whether the twenty things you depend on have been certified against it.

Here is my recommendation after using macOS since macOS Leopard:

  • Spare Mac or separate volume — do the upgrade now if you want to test your own apps early
  • Personal Mac, no critical deadlines — upgrade a week or two after release, once the first bug reports land
  • Work Mac — wait for 27.1 or 27.2, and check your VPN, backup, and audio or video tooling first
  • Mac with an Intel-only app you cannot replace yet — upgrade whenever you like, because Rosetta 2 still covers you this cycle

What to check first after installing

Golden Gate moves several things you use daily. Fifteen minutes here saves a week of confusion.

The Apps view replaced Launchpad

Launchpad is gone from the Dock. In its place is Apps, which combines a Launchpad-style grid with Spotlight-style search and sorts your applications into categories along the top.

If you used Launchpad to uninstall apps by holding Option and clicking the X, that route is gone with it. Removal now happens through the Applications folder or a dedicated uninstaller.

Spotlight does more, and it moved

Spotlight is now the main way to find and do things, with four modes you switch between using Command+1 through Command+4: applications, files, actions, and clipboard history. It also runs app actions and shortcuts directly.

Search results now carry filter chips along the top, so you can narrow a broad search to one app’s results without retyping anything. Typing a slash filters as you go, and the up arrow brings back your search history.

Appearance settings worth a minute

Beyond the glass slider covered above, Appearance now offers four icon and widget styles: Default, Dark, Clear, and Tinted. Tinted colours your icons to match the system accent, and Clear renders them as glass.

The same pane also controls whether window backgrounds pick up your wallpaper color. Golden Gate additionally adds settings that give you more say over where installed apps can appear and what they are allowed to do, which is worth a read-through on a machine you share.

The rest of the fifteen minutes

Work down this list once the desktop appears:

  1. Check the Intel-Based Apps list again under System Settings → General → About → Intel-Based Apps, now that the upgrade has removed Rosetta 2
  2. Launch one Intel app and accept the Rosetta reinstall prompt when it appears
  3. Run a Time Machine backup and confirm it completes on the new system
  4. Reconnect external displays one at a time and confirm both come up
  5. Open your VPN, firewall, and menu-bar utilities and check each one actually works, rather than just launching
  6. Leave it alone for 24 hours before drawing conclusions about speed

If something goes wrong: your rollback plan

Decide on this before you upgrade, not while you are staring at a broken Mac.

The fastest recovery is a Time Machine restore. Boot into macOS Recovery, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup, and pick the snapshot from before the upgrade. This returns you to Tahoe with your files as they were, which is why step one of the checklist comes first.

If you upgraded without a full backup, the path is longer: erase the disk from Recovery, reinstall Tahoe, and restore your data by hand from whatever copies you have. That is the outcome the hour of preparation is designed to prevent.

The bottom line

macOS Golden Gate asks two questions before it asks anything else: is your Mac Apple Silicon, and do the apps you depend on have native builds. Everything else is ordinary preparation.

If you take five things from this guide, take these:

  1. Back up twice — Time Machine plus one independent copy, and restore one file to prove it works
  2. Clear 40 GB before you start, and expect purgeable space to lie to you
  3. Open the Intel-Based Apps list — it is a macOS 28 to-do list, not a macOS 27 emergency
  4. Wait for 27.1 or 27.2 on any Mac you earn a living with
  5. Plan the rollback first — the Time Machine snapshot you take today is the only fast way back

If your Mac is one of the four Intel models that stops at Tahoe, nothing here is urgent. You have security updates for a while yet, and time to plan the next machine on your own schedule.
